The Stones
The Stones - named cheekily after The Rolling Stones - were a band from Dunedin in New Zealand. One of the earliest bands to record on the Flying Nun label, they helped form the style of music known as the Dunedin Sound. The Stones split up not long after its release, although all members of the band went on to success in other local bands. Most important of these was Wayne Elsey's time in the DoubleHappys, a band which itself led to the formation of Straitjacket Fits.

Step Up
This was inspired by politics, and certain narcissistic and irresponsible heads of state who refuse to take responsibility for their actions (or lack thereof). They need to step up to the plate, or the voters will step up at the voting booth.more

Coal Dust Town
The city where I live was historically a coal mining town. In more recent times, though, there has a problem with addiction and homelessness, tent “cities” springing up, and so on, and the associated problem of petty crime - property damage and theft, etc. Although I have been blessed to have never faced those challenges, in writing the lyrics, I tried to project myself there, and imagine living that life. Beautiful
This song idea has been around a long time - I think I originally recorded its grand-daddy when Extreme was still popular... Anyway, it’s been through a number of iterations before ending up here. To me, this song is two things: It’s a bunch of different styles combined into something that I think works well together. I drew on a number of my influences, from rock, R&B, even those horn bands from the ‘70s, and fused it together. And it’s also a metaphor for how we, as humans of all different races and backgrounds, each bring something different to the table, and if we chose to, we could work together and create something...
